40L's mission is: To transform lives by improving educational foundations through the Word of God.
40L began in 1993 as a not for profit teaching students remedial math--mainly college and high school students but also elementary students. 40L was founded by military members who moved often.
In 1994, after moving to a location without any math tutoring organizations, 40L began its literacy journey--starting out by joining a literacy organization that taught with whole word methods. After a month with little to no progress with students, the switch was made to phonics and their students started to make great strides!
40L developed its own phonics lessons designed for older remedial children and adults by adding in multi-syllable words that followed the patterns the single syllalble words being taught. Older students learn multi-syllable words much faster and easier than beginning students. This also is motivational to them, to be able to sound out longer words after years of failure.
Then, 40L added in morphology, focusing on Greek and Latin word roots but also examining spelling and language patterns by language of origin. See our morphology page more about morphology and literacy. Learning high level Greek and Latin words and integrating vocabulary and spelling into this work is also motivational for older students.
The Phonics Lessons using this methodology are self teaching and use the book of Romans. They were put into video form so that parents could continue using them with their children after we moved.
40L's most recent addition to the lessons is the addition of Webster's Speller in 2010. Webster's Speller was designed to teach both reading and spelling. These lessons were designed for use of groups of public school children and so are secular in nature. They also include spelling and morphology, including study of Greek and Latin word roots. These Syllables Spell Success lessons can be used with groups of children or adults or one on one. They require the help of a parent, tutor, or volunteer.
40L has also continued with a bit of math tutoring. Most students with math difficulties are lacking the foundations in math facts and basics. Our math page details solutions for remediating math.
40L volunteers continue to work on new lessons as they work with students. Volunteers are currently working on expanding our Spanish resources and developing lessons for students with dyslexia.
